Russian rocket shell airport in Vinnytsia, Ukrainian president asks to close the skies
Russian rockets on Sunday destroyed a civilian airport in Vinnytsia, the capital of Ukraine’s mid-western region.
Sharing a video message on Facebook, Serhi Borzov, head of the Vinnytsia Regional Military Administration, said, “We have bad news. As a result of a rocket attack near Hvryshevka, a military facility came under fire. State Emergency Service Team currently working.”
The Ukrainian Ground Forces reported on Facebook that in Vinnytsia, “Russian fascists have just fired at the airport.”
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has also called for the closure of the skies after eight Russian missile attacks on Vinnitsa. “Havrishivka airport destroyed,” he said.
“I have just been informed about the missile attack on Vinnytsia. Eight rockets… the airport was completely destroyed,” the president said.
“I was just informed about a rocket attack against Vinnytsia. 8 rockets. Against our peaceful and good-natured Vinnytsia who has never threatened Russia in any way. One rocket strike – cruel and cynical. The airport has been completely destroyed.”
“They continue to ruin our infrastructure, our lives, what we’ve built, and our parents, and grandparents, many generations of Ukrainians,” Zelensky said.
“We repeat everyday – close the skies over Ukraine. Close to all Russian rockets, all military aviation, to all these terrorists. Please create a humanitarian zone without rockets, without aerial bombs. We are humans, and It’s your human duty to protect you, protect civilians, and you can do it. If you don’t, if you don’t at least give us airplanes so that we can defend ourselves, then Only one conclusion remains – you also want us to be killed very slowly,” he added.
Authorities in Ukraine have reported that emergency services were working to put out a fire at the airport caused by rocket attacks by Russia.
Meanwhile, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its 11th day today. Soon after President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation”, Russian troops began heavy shelling and bombardment in neighboring Ukraine.
